Actually Kerry tried to avoid the Vietnam issue completely and put Cleland in charge of countering the smears. The Vietnam smears were possible only because Kerry was anti-war in 1971 and in 2004 the Bushies could still exploit the post 9-11 hysteria to one last time accuse anyone of being against the Iraq occupation of being a "coward and traitor". The other reason was that the press made a terrible mistake and gave the Bushie smear campaign equal time. Most of them regret it deeply now. Those smearvets should have been exposed and ignored right away. But instead they got face time on TV and radio talkshows and repeated the lies over and over. That was all it took, just enough doubt. Then Rove cheated in Ohio and stole it and the rest of history. I don't see anything remotely like that possible against Edwards. Even when he was a trial lawyer (whom Republicans hire all the time), his clients were mainly children with cerebral palsy. Try smearing someone for defending kids like that? It wouldn't work. And what else do they have? He pays a lot for his haircuts? Well what VIP on TV all the time doesn't, unless you're bald?
