the environment that you describe It's been awhile, and I am reluctant to do a full scale study of the epistles again, but as I remember it ... The followers of John the Baptist, and that would include any candidate for Jesus, were caught in very esoteric arguments over jewish scripture. (Imagine Baptist arguments over whether life begins when the sperm hits the egg or when the dna fuses). Paul was very concerned over the Roman Civil war and whether the absolute power of an emperor nullified the special status that Judea held in the Roman system (Judea was an early backer of Rome's break with the remnants of Alexander, and as such held a special autonomy). Paul then was very interested in bringing in non-jews for the struggle for the autonomy of Judea. TP
