<Don't you think that the fact that it won't run on IE3 or 4 might say something about IE rather than about Java?>

not at all. Take a look at who helped to fund the project, IBM. IE implementation of Java is seriously the best that I have come across from an end users perspective. When beta testing the product, it was made very clear that this Java app would not run on IE, and it was the first time I have ever heard of such an instance. Actually, it is usually the other way around (MSFT's Java cab compression and zip methods weren't supported by NSCP).

<If your Excel/VBA/whatever solution runs fine for you, then that's great, but larger corporations require availability for a multititude of platforms across a very large area.>

As I have stated before, the vast majority of the large financial firms have standardized on Excel and customized VB/VBA implementations. Therefore Excel is one of the most practical ways to go. This is especially true when you factor in the difference in functionality and development costs between Java apps and Excel apps.

<Also, to keep the computational resources centralized isn't a very good idea when you've got thousands of users (unless you've got some really big iron).>

I agree completely. That is exactly what the Riskview Java app does. The Java portion is just a graphical front end, and the true analytics are performed on the server. The Excel apps actually download the app logic to the client side, so thier hardware has to put up with the stress of recalc, and not the server.
