Kerry was a real war hero, Bush a phony "war president" pimping for war profiteers who went AWOL from Guard duty as Kerry was fighting on the Mekong.

Kerry was way ahead in the polls based on his true Vietnam stories and for other reasons, especially how he went back to save the life of the Green Beret Rassman, who was a Republican. All Kerry's heroics were true, so the Bush GOP was desperate. They would have liked to assassinate him physically, but decided to do it with lies instead. The smearvets campaign was their secret stink bomb, a dirty trick and hoax but effective.

A rightwing smear campaign is not surprising. What is really shocking is that the MSM and press gave the liars equal time and thereby helped support the BS. As if the smear campaign deserved to be treated as truth until proven false. In fact it was no more credible that the worst kind of tabloid crapola.

Of course it was not proven false until after the slander and sliming was finished. That made Ohio close enough for Rove to steal. The smearvets smears themselves did not make enough of a difference. Kerry was still ahead by a slight margin. Kerry won the election. Or would have if Ohio hadn't been rigged. Kerry's 2% lead in Ohio changed to a Bush 2% lead at the end of the day in a matter of an hour. That's when they stole it. And we know how easy it was for them with all the hackable voting machines they had which they insisted leave no paper trails.
