In financial relativity theory, I calculated a few years ago that gold should make it to $2000 during financial shenanigans. It only has to double again and it's there.

For it to get up to something remotely replacing money as the world's currency, it would have to get to something like $10,000 which won't happen [not in this incarnation of financial mayhem though it will get there before the Qi replaces the US$].

There is certainly plenty of golf fever on the rampage. Not to mention oil fever and other fevers.
