More on the "DV" format for digital video cameras............

The resolution of DV is 720 X 480 and it runs at 30 frames/sec. Isn't this better than MPEG1 resolution? It uses a DCT compression algorithm, as does MPEG, but it results in much less compression -- only about 5:1. The lower compression results in excellent quality video, but the penalty is a higher bit rate -- up to 25 Mbits/sec. This bit rate is O.K. for tape storage, but not so good for disc storage. MiniDV tapes hold 60 minutes. MPEG2 is about 10 Mbits/sec max. 1394 Firwire is designed for bit rates of up to 100 Mbits/sec, so it can easily handle the DV bit rate.

The Sony DCR-PC7 Mini DV digital video camcorder is much smaller than any analog camcorder. It is 2 3/8" wide X 5 1/8" high X 4 5/8" deep. The audio recording is stereo PCM digital. The big downside is the cost -- list $2899. Bring on CUBE's $50 DVx encoder!
