Iraq and Vietnam are similar quagmires. When a president refuses to accept he was wrong and deserves blame, and strings out a conflict for years and years in a totally corrupt country even though he knows it's militarily unwinnable, you have a quagmire. And unlike Vietnam we don't have a draft so no reinforcements and our military is completely exhausted.

You do realize the Surge only affected one part of Iraq where Sunnis had been sheltering Al Qaida. The entire Shia south is largely un-monitored and we are also have major new troubles in the Kurdish north. yes, Al Qaida is being kicked out of Sunni areas, but only because we sided with the Sunnis against the Shia and gave out some huge bribes to tribal leaders.

So where do we go from here? We are the kid with his finger stuck in the dike. If we leave, who knows? Damned if we do, damned if we don't and at the mercy of enormously corrupt leaders and war and oil profiteers on all sides.
