With regard to your post on the usefullness of food irradiation. There is no question that irradiation of food is absolutely harmless and would be of great benefit to the American consumer. The generation of free radicals and loss of nutrients is nonsense, as you have stated. Do people think that burning food over a fire or in an oven doesn't change its chemical make-up? That's the point isnt it? To NOT eat steak that is raw? Irradiation would significantly increase the shelf life of food that we could consume free of pathogens.
However, there is also no question that the Amercian consumer will never accept irradiation, IMO, no matter how many studies are performed. The level of irrational thought that surrounds this topic is amazing. We live in an hysterical society where the mere mention of radiation has mothers clutching their babies in fear and the scriptwriters of "The X-files" churning out scenarios of government consipracies to mutate us.
In the end, a simple wash with a shortlived disinfectant will be much more acceptable, at least to the consumer (and ultimately they are the only ones that count). That is why I am considering buying some OZON.
