Xstrata submits EIA for Altonorte Mo project

Xstrata Copper, the red metal division of Swiss miner Xstrata, has submitted to Chile's environmental regulator Conama an EIA for a molybdenum processing project at its Altonorte smelter in region II.

The project will cost US$20mn and involves leaching molybdenum concentrates to remove impurities, principally copper, according to the EIA report.

Xstrata has said it aims to start construction in the second half of this year and begin operations in 2H09.

The Swiss group sold 720,257t of copper from its operations around the world in the first six months of last year. – BNamericas
