I'd guess the biggest possible source of more extreme weather is that a warmer planet has more moisture in the air, and that moisture stores more heat per unit volume, and is very transportable. Hence there is more chance of significant energy differences meeting each other.

If you look at the discussion on tropical storm strength you'll see that scientists have quite the range of opinions, and that the mechanisms are more complex. It's not just ocean surface temps, but also what prevailing wind conditions do, and so it is not just directly total energy content.
