its much cheaper than coal if you have to buy a new coal plant, which is what these emerging markets have to do. Sure you can take a moment in time and calculate that solar for year #2 or so is more expensive than the same coal plant you are building next door, because for solar you need to buy the panels up front and then after yr 7 or so there are no more costs.

if you check out ausra’s website, you will see that they are planning on running the turbines 27/7. they store much of the heat collected during the day and release it at night to power the turbines when the sun isn’t shining. they use less land per MW than coal (considering the land used in coal mines). 2010 target price for their electricity 7-8 cents per kwh over the 20 depreciation period. but get this, after 20 years, the electricity is almost free! meanwhile you’re still digging up coal, the cost of which keeps going up every year.
