The timing is a bit fuzzy, but I think that the police were given the word to move on the Michigan Avenue protesters immediately after the protesters in the park charged the police line. The trees in Grant Park obscured my view of Michigan Avenue. Remember that there had already been some preliminary events in Lincoln Park, so they police were primed for action.

That was an amazing period. The weird thing is that it all seemed so unbelievable and normal at the same time. Normal was defined differently in those days. It was a great time to come of age politically, even if we couldn't vote.

I have known a lot of Chicago cops in my time. Most of them have been great guys. In 1968, they were not trained for that type of confrontation. Plus they had were working for a combative mayor. Richard J. cost HH the election that night.

The Field Museum was a cool place to work. Driving a cab in the city had to have been occasionally eventful.

By the way, I also got caught in a Sly and the Family Stone riot in Grant Park, but that is a story for another day.
