Mrs. Clinton’s campaign had sought Mr. Kerry’s endorsement, his advisers said, but his backing of Mr. Obama was a particular slap at Mr. Edwards. The relationship between the two men, never warm during the 2004 campaign, soured after their loss.

Mr. Kerry was offended by how abruptly Mr. Edwards distanced himself after their defeat, while Mr. Edwards complained that the Kerry campaign had blocked him from taking on the Bush administration and criticized it for not fighting harder to win the South or contesting the vote in Ohio.

In her memoir, Mr. Edwards’s wife, Elizabeth, mocked Mr. Kerry and his wife as entitled, recounting how the Kerrys had joined the Edwardses on their annual wedding anniversary trip to Wendy’s, but had arranged a five-star gourmet meal to be delivered to their campaign bus in case they did not like the fast food.
