Yeah a lot of stuff had come down before that "culmination" event on Michigan Ave, mostly around Lincoln Park where the protesters were camping. The Michigan Ave thing was definitely planned... it was really well coordinated.

I was working at the old Sears headquarters (not nearly as cool as the Field Museum) at Homan & Arthington when the MLK killing anniversary riot broke out. I knew a guy that was really close with the Black Panther leaders and he had warned me to get the hell out of the 'hood as soon as I could. They let us go at 3:00, and the fun had already started... huge traffic jams with everybody trying to leave the areas at the same time. I was at a standstill in traffic trying to get on the Eisenhower and watching a guy jump up and down on a car about 20 feet away. 20 years old and no fear whatsoever, but the guy riding with me was scared sh-tless.

Yes it was an interesting time to come of age politically. Because of Vietnam, people were INVOLVED. The current "war" seems so much more remote. I'm not sure if it's the nature of the "war", the reporting, no draft or a combination of all. But I didn't know many people then between the ages of say 18 and 25 that were not hysterically against the war... and subsequently involved in the politics.

Remember when LBJ announced he wouldn't run for reelection? That was a shocker.
