Socialized medicine is a system where the govt. is involved in everything. Govt.pays for all benefits, govt. owns the physical hospitals and clinics, and govt. hires and trains doctors and other medical personnel. The UK and Canada are examples. Most other industrialized countries and many developing nations are following a different model. It is a single-payer system, meaning the Govt. acts as the insurer. There are no private health insurance companies. All the other players are part of the private market, i.e. docs, clinics, ambulance services, etc. Pharma companies are private and capitalist publicly traded entities, such as Roche. The distinctions between socialized medicine and a single-payer system are important and should be clearly understood when having a discussion. Single-payer systems appear to be producing better results, and I would argue are much better suited for US.
