TED: Re: this thread and Hot Subjects list ...

The SI Hot Subject algorithm is crucial here, and its exact weighting is a closely guarded secret.
The bland statement >>Score is calculated from a trend analysis formula of bookmarks, posting activity, and click rates.<< doesn't really tell us what is going on. But bear with me for a moment....

Have you noticed that it is possible to "bookmark" the same subject multiple times? At any point in a subject that is already bookmarked, it is still possible to click on "Bookmark this Subject". The result is that the user is taken to a refreshed view of his or her bookmarks page. Only it looks the same, becasue no new bookmarks have been added. But, if the SI bookmark process still records this action as a valid bookmark, then this event should still be counted to the Hot Subjects score. And I'm guessing that "bookmarking" gets a higher weight than just reading. (Do you see where I'm heading here?)

Anyway, I suggest that all FBN'ers spends as much time as possible over the next few days bookmarking the life out of this thread, and conducting serious research as to how long it takes for the additional activity to show up on the FBN score on the Hot Subjects list.
