In the end, it's a free marketplace of ideas. Those who can sell their ideas win out. Those who can't whine that the playing field isn't level.

In the end you may be right. Note the recent shift to the left of the voters.

Unfortunately, it's been pretty common that the better funded candidate usually wins. And they are funded in large part by special interests. That in conjunction with gerrymandering (on both sides) creates a "professional politician class" with the same tenure benefits that conservatives abhor in teachers.

Public funding of elections and a law that requires sensible geographic voting districts would go along way to restoring "a more democratic republic". "Of the people, by the people, and for the people" to quote a Republican. Not of, by and for the special interest with the biggest bucks.

But you are probably way too cynical to buy into change. So let's all just give it up.
