'Well George, we finally knocked the bastard off.' - en.wikipedia.org Sir Ed served in the RNZAF with my uncle, both based in Fiji for a while, not so much contact as my uncle was in admin not aircrew, but they knew each other and their kids knew each other ... after the war my uncle was in NAC the national airline, some there wanted to give Sir Ed a free travel pass, but top management objected, for at least some notable period, there is a funny story related to this but i've forgotten the details ... likely everybody in the country looked long and hard for connections to him after he climbed that mountain, and it wasn't a big population in those days ... favourite son of the nation, thoroughly likeable man
