Hundreds protest new Oregon driver's license rules

"Taking our driver license away take our honesty away. We don't want to be outlaws." If they weren't here illegally, which is dishonest, they wouldn't have a problem with this.

SALEM -- Several hundred people, mostly Latino, are rallying on the Capitol steps in protest of strict new driver's license rules scheduled that will make it harder for illegal immigrants to drive.

The changes, ordered by Gov. Ted Kulongoski, will require drivers show a valid Social Security number. Current rules require DMV to collect, but not verify, numbers for regular drivers.

Signs in Spanish and in English pleaded against the change, scheduled to start Feb. 4. One large banner read: "Taking our driver license away take our honesty away. We don't want to be outlaws."

"Just imagine one of us driving without one," says Cynthia Chavez, 18 of McMinnville. "I think we have the right as everyone else to have an ID."

The rally started at noon. Senate and House transportation members will meet at 1 to start legislation cementing the rules into law.
