"Could have fooled me."

Ask him how often he has gone to the local VFW and actually thanked a Korean war vet. for his or her service?

I suspect he has never done this. I know for a fact that my father would view his war experiences very differently if that happened to him only once. For him, he volunteered because farming wasn't working for him. The Koreans he got to know, he liked. Like with our troops in Vietnam, he had a low opinion of those he didn't know personally. The same stories about ground glass in Cokes bought from street vendors and all.

Given the gratitude he has expressed on this board, that would be a simple thing. Maybe an hour a month. And, much like the Vietnam vets, it would be a life changing experience for the ones he contacted. Maybe not always pleasant, I suspect that some still carry grudges. But most would like some recognition that what they did was a positive.

And most would be grateful for that.
