Thanks! I wish I knew the answers?

Will PC growth continue? I've worried that the currency problems in Asia might trigger a slow down. Recently, I read in The New York Times that the health of our financial markets may depend upon those countries ability to buy American goods.

I have read on other threads that wafer and dram prices continue to fall and that there is still a great deal of excess in the market, as you pointed out.

In the past, how long has a typical downturn lasted?

I can believe that if chips are cheaper, you would think that demand would increase. We took advantage of lower chip prices to step us memory on our pc.

You mention:

<The rapid shift to .25 and.18 with 300mm looming, and new
processes(Cu; low k dielectrics, etc) require a massive retooling. The existing field base of equipment is obsoleted much quicker. So like it or not if you are losing money or not, if you want to be in the game, you have to spend.>

I'm an amateur here. So does this mean that Applied Materials will have to spend a great deal of money on new technology. Is AMAT already using some of the new tech that you mention (Cu;low k dielectrics, etc.)?

From what I've read about the tight US job market, I do not believe the US will experience a recession unless there is a recesion in a significant market, like Asia.
