If you think you can name a powerful nation that isn't (or wasn't) perfidious, I have a bridge I think you might be interested in buying. Peruvians have a poor opinion of the English pirates (like Drake) who stole the gold that the Spaniards had stolen fair and square from the natives. In the overall reckoning, the crimes of the Spaniards in the Americas were not clearly less than those of the English. If the Portuguese behaved better it was probably just because they didn't get the piece of the pie with all the precious metals.
