"Who frightened him more, the Romans or the Jews?"

It was not a matter of fearing their authority, he did not fear them. It was a matter of having his authority tested.

It was set up to be a no win, lose/lose situation for Jesus. His handling of it was not only creative and masterfully wise but it demonstrated his authority over the law of both religious establishment and the civil rulers, which they would later find no resolution for that seemed workable, outside torturing him to death... same stuff happens today to people who dare to tell the truth but without the dramma of the cross.

"why did Christ only tell the woman to "go and sin no more"? "

It is said that he had something denied to ordinary human beings, the knowlege of what lay in the hearts of other human beings. He often times pointed out evil hypocrites and righteous individuals as he passed through multitudes of people waiting to hear him to speak. He had the authority to forgive her on the spot, knowing her genuine heart felt repentence for what she'd done and that her sin was therefore forgiven by God, all that was left was for her to live a life of exemplary righteousness going forward. He was a guide to his disciples. Discipline comes from the word disciple. In modern days we've come to confuse the words discipline with punishment. But Jesus knew the purpose of punishment was only served when it resulted in guiding his followers on the right path of goodness. The woman was guided by his actions, as was the mob ... no punishment was called for.
