A friend of mine whose family was originally from Italy told me that when Italians want to say "go to hell", they say "go to Naples"....in Italian of course. Is that true?

It's a benign version of the truth. When Italians tell each other to FU, they say "va fa in culo". That means literally " go F in the A$$". When they don't want to go quite as obscene, they will say " va fa a Napoli" which means literally "go F in Naples" ... it's a way to avoid being really gross, sort of like saying go frig yourself instead of the original.

Naples is among my least favorite cities in Italy...it's a stopping point on the way to Capri or Sorrento...get in and get out.
