I believe NCR is the current record holder of the TPC-D benchmark, and exceeded the benchmark by providing multiple threads, whereas others only provide a single thread

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 7, 1997-- NCR today announced that it is the first vendor to accept the industry "Data Warehouse Performance Challenge," which was recently issued by a consortium of leading data warehousing and database technology experts.
The Challenge was developed so that vendors can demonstrate to IT and business users that they can deliver the performance required to make large-scale, dynamic data warehouses work. The new suite of tests will be used to measure performance in ad hoc query, multi-user query, and other areas not addressed by existing industry benchmarks.
"While the widely used TPC-D benchmark tests single-user performance, query throughput, and price/performance very well, NCR believes this new performance challenge will enhance the value of TPC-D results and be a more accurate measurement of database performance reflecting the real-world problems companies have in responding to multiple business questions from dozens of simultaneous users," said Mark Hurd, vice president of marketing for NCR's Computer Systems Group.
"Because the NCR Teradata database was designed from the ground up to perform exceptionally well under such conditions, we welcome the opportunity to demonstrate our superior data warehousing capabilities to the entire industry," Hurd added.
Participating vendors must run the new test suite following the completion of an audited TPC-D benchmark. The consortium will provide a set of ad hoc queries that will be unknown to vendors in advance of each test. The first test suite, which will be available for a 30-day challenge period starting December 10, is aimed at addressing the concerns of users who must implement and operate large scale, production data warehouses.
Currently, the consortium is gathering input from users and vendors for the performance challenge and will release specifications later this month. Results of the first challenge will be published in early 1998. Well-known industry consultants involved in the consortium are:
Stephen Brobst, managing partner of Strategic Technologies and Systems, a Boston, MA, firm that specializes in the implementation of large scale data warehouse systems;
Sean Kelly, managing partner of The Data Warehouse Network, a Dublin, Ireland, firm that is Europe's premier data warehouse consultancy and market intelligence company;
Francois Raab, president of Information Paradigm, a Colorado Springs, CO, consulting firm specialized in accurate sizing of information systems through the design, management and analysis of performance benchmarks; and
Richard Winter, president of Winter Corporation (www.wintercorp.com), a Boston, MA, firm that provides management consulting, analysis, platform selection and architectural assistance to organizations dealing with very large databases.
