SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 20, 1996-- Semiconductor manufacturers are reaping the benefits as the worldwide consumer electronics semiconductor market continues to grow, reaching $24.6 billion in 1995, according to Dataquest. Toshiba was the top vendor in 1995 with revenue of nearly $3.3 billion. Dataquest analysts attribute Toshiba's success to its substantial line of ICs targeted at the consumer market. Dataquest expects other vendors to pursue aggressive marketing efforts into this market in 1996. "Consumer electronics is one of the most important segments in the electronics business today and it represents a vast opportunity for manufacturers of a variety of types of semiconductors," said Jonathan Cassell, industry analyst in Dataquest's Consumer Multimedia Semiconductor Application Markets Worldwide program. Reflecting the fact that the Japanese and Asian regions are the world's largest for consumer electronics equipment production, Japan-based companies dominate the list of top-ranking semiconductor suppliers in this area. Four of the top five suppliers of semiconductors for consumer electronics applications are Japanese companies (see Table 1). -0- *T Table 1 Top 5 Semiconductor Vendors for Consumer Electronics by Worldwide Revenue Estimates (Millions of Dollars) Company 1995 Revenue 1995 Market Share(%) Toshiba 3,286 13.4 NEC 2,710 11.0 Matsushita 1,905 7.7 Philips 1,724 7.0 Sanyo 1,613 6.6 Others 13,375 54.3 Total 24,613 100.0
