Candidates on the issues: Immigration Immigration: The nation’s struggle with illegal immigration exploded into the Reno community last fall when immigration agents raided 11 area McDonald’s restaurants and arrested 56 suspected illegal immigrants. The raids prompted fiery protests from both sides of the issue, with hundreds of marchers filling the streets of downtown Reno. Among Republican voters, immigration is one of the three most important issues in determining their vote for president, according to a recent RGJ poll. Hillary Clinton: Calls for comprehensive immigration reform that includes a guest worker program and a pathway to citizenship. Also voted in favor of a 700-mile fence along the U.S. Mexico border. Spoke out against the ICE raids as a way to deal with the problem of illegal immigration. John Edwards: Supports comprehensive immigration reform that provides illegal immigrants a way to earn citizenship. Does not believe illegal immigrants should be entitled to in-state tuition or driver’s licenses. Barack Obama: Supports a pathway to citizenship. Voted in favor of the 700-mile fence along the U.S. Mexico border. Said the ICE raids should target employers who are abusing illegal immigrants. “We’re not going to solve a problem with 12 million immigrants here, 50 immigrants at a time.” Bill Richardson: Called for ICE to halt raids such as the one at the local McDonald’s restaurants. Supports comprehensive immigration reform that includes earned citizenship. Rudy Giuliani: As a presidential candidate, he has supported adding Border Patrol agents and building barriers on the U.S.-Mexico border. New York was considered a “sanctuary city” during his time as mayor. Mike Huckabee: He supports a border fence and more Border Patrol agents. He has also said illegal immigrants should have 120 days to leave the country and could apply for re-entry without penalty. Duncan Hunter: He wrote legislation to build a double fence on the U.S.-Mexico border. Said the entire fence would be completed in six months if he were elected president. John McCain: His support for this summer’s immigration reform bill nearly killed his candidacy. He said he advocates border security before any immigration reform can take place. Ron Paul: He supports building a wall between he U.S. and Mexico and said he would end “birthright citizenship” because illegal immigrants believe having a child in the U.S. gives them a right to stay. Mitt Romney: He favors a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border and said he is opposed to any sort of amnesty for illegal immigrants. Fred Thompson: He has said border security is a top priority. As a senator, he voted to increase funding for Border Patrol agents.
