But what if "greed in troubled times", and "profiteering" (or at least certain forms of it) produces positive practical results, and trying to fight it produces negative results?

Also are you just saying its immoral, or do you also support the idea of outlawing charing very high prices, resulting in massive profits in such situations?

I would also add that even if some percentage of profit is too high morally, or even somehow practically (and idea that I'm not likely to support but will accept for the moment for the sake of argument) actual price controls, even on if only "gouging" during emergencies, are likely to produce more negative results than positive. In many cases when they are applied when dealing with gasoline and such, its not just 200% or 100% but relatively normal levels of profit (if they involve higher than pre-disaster prices) that cause legal problems for the sellers.

As a dentonlogical matter I think people should be able to sell things for whatever they want if they can find a willing buyer. I'm open to consequtialist arguments against the idea, but as far as I can tell the real world consequences seem to support my more abstract ideas on this issue.
