Cricket, I believe you can't take a tax loss only if you buy it back within 30 days of your selling. Your holding period is not an issue.
Usually there should be a dead cat bounce when shorts cover in a couple of days following a steep drop in share price. In Jbil's case, since the growth picture in near term has changed dramatically from 23% to 7% sequentially, it is difficult to predict where and when the bounce will take place. I remember in spring of this year, COMS continued its non-stop slide for almost 10 days before rebound. But this may not happen to Jbil since the general market condition is now quite different.
