Oh, I think ANWR will be explored when things get a little more desperate. The decision will likely be rammed thru by a Democratic president pulling a "Nixon goes to China" move after global oil production starts falling due to peak oil. Perhaps by Clinton 44 in her second term. Scary thought, isn't it?

Of the US areas that are currently off limits to exploration, ANWR is the environmental crown jewel with the strongest national political opposition. So why bother beating your heads against the wall in frustration?

The blocked offshore areas of California and Florida would be easier nuts to crack, because the opposition is mainly local. These states are in deep economic doodoo because of the housing crisis, with tax receipts going down the toilet. So now is the time to offer them the proper incentives (bribes) in the form of a large cut of the production royalties! Surely there are still some politicians in the USA who remember how to cut deals?
