I still have no idea how GOOG makes money outside of search Well, your layman's perspective is accurate. 98% of Google's revenue comes from search ads. All that other cool stuff generates about zero income. Their argument is that this stuff "helps build the brand". That's a convenient excuse, of course. In short, they're basically a one-trick pony. What has saved them has been the stupidity of their competitors, who have been way too slow in moving into the ad space. Yahoo, in particular, totally dropped the ball in this regard.
