John, I have to agree with many things you say. I thought I was the one saying you can't prove there aren't little green men. Not to worry. We agree.
Yes, believing in God, something unseen is reasonable. I do such things all day every day, from believing in management of a company to do things right, even in the absence of very strong evidence that they always do, to believing that if I drive on the left, people won't drive into me. We are making bets on the future based on various hypotheses. You are betting on Big Dog. I don't share the hypothesis or theory, whichever you want to call it. But my many bets/theories are no more valid, I realize that, I just have faith.
Jfred will be foaming at the mouth now! But he is pretty much religious too, he just has different supernatural beliefs; he thinks that there is a magic free mind which can do some trick that it wasn't going to do an instant before. If you changed it to the "Free Will" religion, he'd be in like a hungry dog. Hiya jfred; cheeky eh. But you give Ms Bartley heaps and your Aussie mates give me some too. So there's a bit for you.
A lot of antireligion is antiauthority I think. People who find a domineering father a real pain aren't going to look kindly on a domineering church full of domineering men with a domineering BigGuy. Throw in a thousands of witch burnings and the stage is set for a good deal of religious resistance.
