Couple comments about all the McCain bashing in various places.

1) McCain has a large amount of support among moderate Republicans and sane Democrats and Independents (Lieberman example), even though conservatives dislike him.

2) McCain can win a general election. 2008 will not be an easy election for Republicans. The support that McCain will get from those that do not always vote straight Republican every year may be the difference in close states in November.

3) McCain is a decent person. I want a decent person in the oval office. Not everybody running for president is a decent person, IMO. Not everybody that has been president was a decent person, IMO.

4) The strongest 2008 Republican Ticket? McCain for President, Thompson for VP. (Thompson would gladly take that job and would be good at it, IMO)

5) McCain's biggest weakness is his age - he may be a one term president. While not ideal, I find myself being more concerned about getting the next 4 years right than hoping for increased odds of 8 years while putting the next 4 in jeopardy.
