KT, I don't hate unions. I am simply pointing the obviously negative impact they have had on their own well being and the shareholders of the companies that employed them. You are missing the point. Unproductive behavior is actually rewarded. I see it almost every day. If you are always on time, don't take extra breaks, are super productive (or God forbid early and start working before you punch in because you are bored) it is considered a negative because you are making other people look bad. Promotions and more responsibility aren't given based on merit. They are given based on seniority. Why would you be surprised that a bunch of idiots are then running the operations at some of the important lower levels of the business? In addition, when resources are used to pay ridiculous salaries and benefits that are no longer possible to pass on to the rest of us as higher prices (because of the global economy), there are fewer resources left to invest in quality control, new manufacturing processes, R&D etc... at the higher levels.
