JF, > I just put in one of those tankless water heaters... cost me $1400 and saves me ~$30 a month.

Isn't it also better for those times you really want more hot water than what a tank can provide?

I'm fortunate to live in a very modern house that can stay cool during the summer and warm during the (relatively cold) winter. I also let the power company put in a remote-controlled limiter on my central air conditioner so that they can throttle it during periods of peak demand. Was torture for my wife and I during one hot day last year, but that's our fault for becoming so soft.
