John; That is what I mean when I speak of Gatescode processors., Or lose the Intel in Wintel. There are so many CPU makers that Intel indeed is becoming redundant. Why do you think the slot 1 fiasco goes on. Intel is hoping to force it down the throats of all to the point where they stuff the Intel down W's throat to make it Wintel again. I hope Billy coughs it up right quick.
I think that AMD and Compaq and others will make a viable alternative to the slot 1 scheme. As I see it at 1000 Mhz the wavelength is .3 meters. IE about 14 inches. So if you have a close design on a circuit board with parts on both sides and extra small chip carriers you should have no problem with a CPU and Cache(both) and support chips in a 2" x 2" square. You will need some heat outrace paths and a blower, but it should be doable to 1 Gig. Radiative emf effects should be controllable with careful designs.

So I think the slot 1 is not needed technically, just for market control.
