Steve - Thanks for the commentary opinion on Microsoft (I'm not a big fan myself) but my previous post was directed to get a response on whether anyone else was concerned from a Compaq point of view. Compaq says that the number of customers affected should be in the "five figures" range. I have no idea how many Presario computers Compaq sold have its Home Base software but considering the 35% market share for Internet Explorer plus the many bundling agreements between Microsoft and others (AOL, ISPs, etc.), I would guess that about 20% of all Presarios shipped with Home Base will be upgraded to IE 4.0 eventually.

Personally, I would be extremely ticked off at Microsoft (not Compaq) if my hard disk was erased due to this problem. In fact, I think a class action lawsuit may be possible against Microsoft since it knew about the problem and failed to fix it causing "significant" harm to those users whose data was wiped.

Just my $0.02
