I think you have to look at the PE from a potential future perspective. My gut hunch is the PV manufacturing base will probably be 300 to 500 times larger in 15 to 20 years from what it is now (In terms of KW hrs).

If renewables get renewed the whole sector (Wind, PV's, Solar thermal and others) will take off again. This industry has gone through fits and starts since the 70's. But with time and technology this stuff has matured to reaching grid parity especially in the case of wind power. PV's are very close, especially in the area of thin films.

If you think our government will encourage alternative sources of energy then I would back up the truck here and buy. As an investor I believe we just got handed a gift. If you don't think the U.S. government will support our shift to renewables then I probably wouldn't buy most of this stuff short term. But the rest of the world is starting to see the value of it.

FSLR will reach grid parity sometime in 2010. Silicon based panels will take longer but in many situations they make sense now. Since we all pretty much agree that carbon based fuels are going to continue rising in price the intersection point is quickly approaching. Most of the technologies to solve our energy problems are here right now. A number of other countries have decided that this is a serious problem and are applying people and resources to solve these problems and are creating many high paying jobs. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that this country is beginning to miss some massive opportunities.

Now just throw in global warming and I rest my case.
