Intel to shut down last Silicon Valley 'fab' this year

mercurynews.com

article:

The D2 facility has been used to develop NOR flash memory chips and to produce Intel's XScale processors used in cell phones and handheld devices. Intel sold its XScale business to Marvell Technology Group of Bermuda in 2006, and Marvell will make the chips elsewhere beginning this quarter, said Mulloy.

Last year, Intel and STMicroelectronics agreed to combine their NOR flash businesses, and the new Switzerland-based company, Numonyx, will cease using the fab in the third quarter, Mulloy said.

Intel is looking at using the facility to make masks required in photolithography. Masks are opaque plates with tiny holes through which light is shone to lay out transistors on semiconductors.
