Well, I am no scientist, but as I understand it, the definition of theory in science is very different from the everyday usage which means opinion or guess, e.g., the theory of relativity. There is quite a bit of evidence regarding the origins of the universe, or at least the timeline, and much regarding evolution. There is nothing that supports in a scientific way the existence of a Supreme Being. I wish there were. It would make for a lot more believers. Our problem recently is with the New Earthers. They are very strange. I really just want religion kept out of the classroom at this point, based on scientific reasons. I have absolutely no problem with teaching creationism in a literary or cultural studies class. In fact, I am rather "unliberal" in a lot of ways when it comes to our own culture. While I believe in learning and studying all cultures, I also support educating our young people on the foundation of our country. Again, this doesn't mean BELIEF, it means commonalities and bases and how we got where we are.
I agree with you about distortions, and not just distortions, but the actual teaching of specific values, creeping in. We are stripping parents of their ability to raise their children as they see fit. I understand the liberal argument for it, but I am no more inclined to interfere with parental authority than I am to tell women that they aren't in charge of their own bodies. That's my libertarian streak. :) |
