As for changing things, though, you are an optimist. I'm pretty pessimistic myself.

I think it will be a two step process. We will first move to what Hillary and the other Dem candidates are proposing... a universal system still in the hands of the private sector, with a public insurance element. From that space it will be much easier to have the system evolve to primarily single payer.

At any rate, I suspect it will be a pitiful sight watching Dems try to reverse things.

Oh I agree. I expect the next President to have one (miserable) term. There will be a lot of pain before things can get back in balance. A 'Marshal Plan' to get off oil might help. It would create a lot of investment, exportable technology and some significant economic dividends.
