Thomas Jefferson coined the term "separation of church and state", when he expounded on the meaning of the First Amendment, which is good enough for me. The best protection for all is in enforcing this concept (imo)and keeping actual religion out of the public sphere.

But I do think we have gone too far and are throwing out the baby-- as in prohibiting "religious" music from the curriculum, or not accepting the literary and cultural value of the Bible. Our children were required to read Greek mythology, why not Biblical mythology (and I use the term merely to argue for it in a non-religious way, not to insult anyone who believes)? It is culturally important. I suppose it's a can of worms though, since some believe that teaching it in any form is a violation. It's too bad people aren't a little more tolerant and secure.

As a musician, I have really strong opinions about being told that a Bach Mass would be unacceptable because it's about religion. I hate that we have to actually count the number of religious numbers in a concert to make sure we are balanced with the secular, so that doing an Oratorio would be illegal in Texas unless you added some non-religions pieces.

But outside of allowing certain things into the appropriate curriculum, I support the separation (as in prayer in the classroom).
