Forgiveness is a major theme in the Gospels. I'm not sure what other sources promote it as heavily.

Think of what western society was like in ancient times before the rise of Christianity. Slavery was accepted with no limits on the rights of masters over their property and no one thought it was wrong, ditto infanticide, the killing of animals and slaves for entertainment in the Roman coloseums, and much else that would repel a modern civilized person. What changed western civilization for the better? Christianity.

There are forces trying to eliminate Christianity and its influence in the name of liberating people from its moral strictures. The people pushing this can't imagine that anything harmful could come from it for either society or individuals.
