AMBAC's downrating will force pension funds and insurance companies to sell assets as they are downrated from AAA because the underlying insurer is itself downrated. The regulators will work with the funds and the insurance companies, but volatility will nonetheless increase.

Question: Why does a AAA rated instrument need insurance?

Answer: Because ratings and ratings agencies are well known jokes.

It is difficult to overemphasize the size and potential volatility of the CDS market, the elephant in the room no one wishes to acknowledge because doing so is just too scary.

I smell the sour scent of panic building.
