Hi Everyone,

Well, last night I was working with Dell's software technical support in an attempt to restore my OS. Here's what happened:

As you may know, I've been having nothing but trouble trying to install Quicken 2008. I am currently using Q5. I was able to install and run Q8. When you install Q8 it uninstall Q5. This is part of the Q8 installation process. I then found that when I booted my computer it hung up in the boot process and I received the HAL.dll is corrupt or missing error message. I was requested to reinstall the file. So, I recovered my computer using Norton's Save and Restore.

I then tried to install using the Safe Mode. Still, the same problem. I finally found an uninstall utility on the Quicken website. I the utility and it sure deleted Q5. I also deleted or damaged my OS to a point that I could not recover my computer using the Norton program. So, I contacted Dell's support, and paid the fee that was required. It took about 2 to 3 hours to rebuild my OS. What a mess, but I was lucky in as much as I have my computer back.

I don't know how wide spread this problem, or if my computer just won't work with Q. In any event, it's a problem that Q should look into. Lot's of luck.

So, I noticed the following. Uninstalling Q5 with Q8 caused my computer to failure. Uninstalling Q5 with the uninstall utility caused my OS to failure. Therefore, I don't believe the root cause of the problem is Q8, it caused by the uninstalling of Q5. The only uninstall method that I have not tried is using the Add/Remove Software feature in XP. And, needless to say, I'm not about to try it.

So, anyone upgrading Q should be careful. If you do upgrade, let me know how it goes.
