The fear is of losses in stocks and other messy bonds and mortgage-backed stuff. It's like an old-fashioned bank run, but instead of gold everyone wants T-bills. Panic.

The perception of inflation risk is totally absent for U. S. investors.

Incidentally, after seeing the rise in the Shanghai market, I was resigned to a drop in FXP today. Instead, it's up because the index fund, FXI, is being sold off in the United States even with Asian markets closed. So far, anyway.
