It is also more convenient for Intel and STM that the necessary cutbacks are done by Numonyx, rather than Intel and STM.

That, in turn has crippled the operations, IMO, because, my guess is that Intel and STM have not made the necessary head count cuts in 2007, it has dragged to 2008, and when the new entity gains its independance, it will be saddled with costs that are unbearable. Mass firings will surely undermine the morale of the fraction (half?) of remaining staff.
