I gather the fact that it would do both troubles you. Am I right?

Doing both doesnt bother me, and I would likely support both depending on the details. I agree with increased education spending (though I want a standards based approach) and would also support a massive increase in all kinds of energy research. I think both are parts of a good long-term package to help the economy.

My problem is with packaging a structural and stimulus package together. They are two entirely different bills. Rushing a stimulus package into action makes sense, while a structural reform of the US economy should be well thought out. I dont want energy research projects popping up just because the money happens to be there. Take the time to do it right.

This stimulus bill is a recipe for all kinds of random spending projects to be thrown in....and that is exactly what Stiglitz is proposing. So regardless of whether I support the actual proposals, I wouldnt agree with such an omnibus type of bill.

This is actually a bit close to one of my pet peaves....attaching unneccesary spending/riders into 1000 page bills.
