The Republicans of yore have no similarities with the Republicans of today when it comes to prudent spending.

I have no quarrel with Ike or even Nixon/Ford. It's starting with Reagan and the Bushes that the nature of Republican governance changed dramatically for the worse. Maybe McCain will restore the old Republican prudence, if he wins.

PS My chart starts in the fifties precisely because WWII and the Great Depression radically distort the spending picture. I don't think that a Republican president would have spent less during WWII.
