Matt-Thanks for the start of a thread in an area that appears to be one of the key elements of the future of computing-Network Computers
We can have a discussion later on the overall definition of network computers(NC), but I believe many people still envision NC as a direct competitor to the destop. While this may be the case in some or many applications, a very large future seems to loom for a whole new class of NC type devices that are starting to be called Network Appliances, Computing Appliances, and Internet Appliances. It appears many lump all these into NC category. This area seems that it could be much bigger than only the desktop network computer.
Looking for companies that cut across several of these lines. One of these appears to be Patriot Scientific(PTSC). There seems to be a synergy between SUNW and PTSC that has been growing since the JavaOS licensing in July 97. Patented ShBoom Technology could be a low cost enabler for NC type devices.

Matt, as you can see from above press in URL of item 5 above, Java-based network computers will be shipping in the near future.
In addition, press indicates that PTSC has patented low-cost Java-native processor in silicon now, and is positioning to be the leader in price/performance in the Java-native processor market.
Am very interested in others views on Java processors and possible impact on the broad NC market defined at top of post. Thank you.
Matt, Thanks again. Topic is very timely and it has great potential for becoming a very interesting thread.
